Revelstoke COVID-19 cluster increases by one to 50 total cases, 14 active

Revelstoke COVID-19 cluster slows down. One new case since Dec. 4, bringing the total to 50 confirmed cases, 14 active.

Interior Health (IH) says the total number of positive cases in the Revelstoke COVID-19 cluster is now at 50, an increase of one since they last reported 49 cases on Dec. 4.

IH says there are currently 14 active cases in Revelstoke and that, “all those individuals are self-isolating.” A total of 36 people have recovered.

In a statement, IH said it “continues to urge everyone to continue to follow all public health guidance and orders.”

Interior Health COVID-19 cases for Dec. 7

On Dec. 7, IH reported 203 new cases since Friday in the health region. There were 636 active cases. 14 people were in hospital and four in ICU. IH also announced two new COVID-19 deaths over the weekend reporting period, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to six.

Three long-term care sites in the health region are reporting cases, all in the Okanagan. There are five cases at Mountainview Village in Kelowna, eight cases at McKinney Place in Oliver, and two cases at Village by the Station in Penticton.

“I’m sad to report two additional COVID-19 related deaths; bringing the total in Interior Health to six,” said IH president and CEO Susan Brown in a statement. “Both people died in hospital over the weekend and I would like to extend our condolences to their families and caregivers.

“Let’s all continue to do our part as we continue fighting this challenging pandemic together.”

No daily data for Revelstoke cases

Provincial authorities such as the BC Centre for Disease Control do not provide daily data on a Local Health Area (LHA) basis, such as for the Revelstoke LHA. IH has said it will update the Revelstoke COVID-19 cluster twice per week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

On November 26, Interior Health first made a statement on the Revelstoke cluster, confirming that the case count had risen to 22. It was the first time Interior Health had confirmed cases in Revelstoke.

In a surprise announcement during a Nov. 25 TV town hall, Minister of Health Adrian Dix disclosed their were 22 COVID-19 cases in the Revelstoke cluster, the first time the government had confirmed cases here. The last period the government had reported on was the calendar month of October, when there were no resident cases of COVID-19. The number had sat at zero for months.

On November 19, revelstokemountaineer.com confirmed multiple test-positive cases in Revelstoke by contacting those who were sick and had positive tests. The individuals consented to release the information based on an anonymity agreement with us. Their motivation was to make community members aware of the spread of COVID-19 in lieu of any official announcement from government authorities. The Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, has stated that providing communities information on local outbreaks could jeopardize patient privacy.

‘Surge’ of COVID-19 test requests in Revelstoke leads to delays

On November 18, revelstokemountainer.com published two stories about restaurants reporting possible exposures. News of local exposures led to changes in COVID-19 safety behaviour in the community. Also that week, the B.C. government announced further COVID-19 related orders, which also contributed to changes in behaviour, such as indoor mask-wearing requirements.
