A much-anticipated City of Revelstoke report on controversial proposed logging in the Mount Macpherson recreation trails, which will impact cycling, Nordic skiing and hiking facilities there, is expected to be presented to Revelstoke City Council at their April 14 meeting.
Acting mayor Linda Nixon made the announcement during a ‘mayor’s update’ portion of the Mar. 24 council meeting.
The logging issue has been winding its way through city processes in the past months, including numerous meetings between city councillors, city staff and stakeholders. The City of Revelstoke’s economic development department has been charged with the task of determining options and recommendations for city council.
The Mount Macpherson trails recreation area is located outside of city limits, so city council has limited options.
BC Timber Sales, a semi-autonomous arm of the B.C. provincial Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, is planning logging in the Mount Macpherson recreation area next year. They are expected to finalize their logging plans this fall.
Residents opposed to the plan say that the area’s recreation value as a local resource and tourist destination outweighs the short-term economic benefit of logging.
Revelstoke City Council meetings are public meetings. They take place on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 3 p.m. in council chambers, located just across Second Street East from city hall at 103 Second Street East.
