Stoke Style Report: with feathers in her hair

A tendril of feathers glimpsed with a slight hair movement is a growing hair trend in Revelstoke for summer.

1^st Impressions hairdresser Britt Cochrane says it’s a style she’s seen in Vancouver and was popular with celebrities in 2010/11, which is slowly infiltrating Revelstoke and other mountain towns.

With the weather is warming up, hairdressers expect to see more requests for it now that toques are not a daily neccesity. This bohemian style particularly appeals to our mountain life — laid-back and earthy.

Feathers used are generally from roosters and are similar to those used by fly fishermen. Like any byproduct of animal used for fashion, it is up to the wearer’s discretion.

Britt says the trend is mainly popular with females, but it’s certainly not limited.

“I saw feathers in a beard the other day, which was interesting,” she says. “He pulled it off.”

To attach the feather extensions, a bead is threaded onto a section of hair to which the feathers are then inserted and clasped shut to the hair with pliers.

Feathers grow out with the hair. Kelsey Barrett got her first set of feathers eight months ago and most hairdressers will do a free movement.

“I really like the way it looks and I think it adds some dimension to my hair,” Kelsey says.

“And you don’t always see it. I like that it’s not bold, just subtle. It’s really pretty when it comes through.”

There’s a variety of natural feathers in brown tones, or striped patterns, though those looking to make a statement can go bold with bright colour choices.

“I think it’s something fun that you can do for cheap to update your hair,” Kelsey says.
