Stoke Style Report: Revelstoke’s a melting pot of looks

Note: The Revelstoke Mountaineer is getting into fashion. Our periodical Stoke Style Report by Emily Kemp will explore what people are wearing on the streets of Revelstoke and the personal philosophies behind the threads.

Welcome to Revelstoke, where fashion is a mixed bunch, just like the community itself. There’s locals, transients and a variety of budgets and preferences in-between; style here really is in the eye of the beholder.

When I chat to people in Revelstoke about our style, there are mixed sentiments. Some could call us anti-fashion, but then, that’s a style in itself.

There’s those that consume high-quality, functional fashion, which is first and foremost performance-based. Gore-Tex, water-wicking, 100% wool thermals, these are the items that get our hard-earned cash. Funky designs, bright colours and streamlined features are an added benefit.

As a result, this means there are plenty of snow and sports brand logos floating around.

What type of shops Revelstoke has is a good indicator of our fashion priorities. As an outdoors focused town, there are multiple ski stores to suit our practical needs. There’s also a few leggings and accessory stores and only some options for modern, mainstream fashion.

The thrift store is one of the most popular shops in town and its quick turnover outfits many in town with an affordable and unique vintage style.

While skate shoes still make an appearance in winter, boots are compulsory for trudging through the slush-city and many invest in quality such as a nice pair of Sorels or Muck Boots to keep the toes cosy.

Generally, casual style is the go-to here and you can be comfortable being comfortable. The Revelstoke dinner jacket – a plaid flannel – suits plenty just fine. And you can be the epitome of snow-sport style just by throwing on a bright ski/snowboard jacket with a toque to match.

Revelstoke does have its moments where it packs a serious style punch though opportunities for formal fashion are few and far in-between.

You’re most likely to see on-trend winter fashion here in the coffee shops, the local Grizzlies games or at the theatre.

But despite our apparent ambivalence to mainstream fashion trends, Revelstoke is a creative source for a number of fashion and accessory designers who call this town, home.
