Special Olympics BC program revived in Revelstoke

The Special Olympics program in Revelstoke is up and running again in Revelstoke after a hiatus for the past several years.

We stopped by the Revelstoke Community Centre on Mar. 31 to speak with the coordinators, coaches and participants about the revived program, which seeks to enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and their community.

Melissa Jameson is the public relations coordinator for Special Olympics BC Revelstoke. The revival started last spring when an executive committee was formed.
Currently, they’ve worked up to three programs that focus on athletics and exercise core skills, each targeting an age group.

Active Start is a family-centred program for children aged 2–4. Coach Whitney Kendrick works with participants on basic motor skills like running, jumping, throwing and fun-based activities.

FUNdamentals targets kids aged 7–11. Coach Krystal Symons leads participants through basic sport-focused skills like soccer and basketball skills, for example.

Club Fit is for ages 14 and over and focuses on overall health and fitness, serving as a supplement to other sports involvement. Assistant coaches Giles Shearing and Steve Moore were leading participants through a session in the dance centre on Mar. 31. They help head coach Heather Hood.

Special Olympics BC Revelstoke is still building their program and they’re always looking for more community involvement. It could be as a board member, organizer, a coach or those interested in participating.
