Saturday MVI near Albert Canyon kills one, severely injures another

The driver of a tractor-trailer unit was killed and a logging truck driver is in hospital in a coma following a three-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway near Albert Canyon on Saturday, May 6.

Revelstoke RCMP say the incident happened when an eastbound tractor-trailer crossed the centre line and collided with two vehicles.

One was a pickup truck carrying a family, the other was an empty logging truck.

The tractor-trailer that crossed the line was severely damaged and then veered off the road, killing the driver.

The logging truck driver was severely injured and is currently being treated at Royal Inland Hospital in Kelowna. Police said that man was in a coma.

The family in the pickup were only slightly injured, but their vehicle and a boat they were towing was destroyed.

The crash happened at 3 p.m., soon after the highway reopened following a mudslide and avalanche control earlier in the day. The accident led to a 10-hour closure while police and the coroner investigated, then clean-up crews cleared the scene.

RCMP are investigating the incident, and are looking at whether the tractor-trailer was travelling too fast for the conditions.
