Roundabout proposed to fix confusing intersection at Victoria Road and Fourth Street

One of the most confusing intersections in Revelstoke, Fourth Street and VIctoria Road could become a roundabout. City staff are recommending a grant application be submitted to the Gas Tax Strategic Priorities fund to cover the estimated $5.85 million project. If successful the project could get underway sometime in 2018.

Another roundabout could be in the works for Revelstoke. This one aimed at fixing the confusing intersection at Victoria Road, Fourth Street and Townley Street.

City staff are recommending council give approval to send a grant application to the Federal Gas Tax Strategic Priorities Fund at their May 23 meeting. If successful the grant could cover up to 100 per cent of the project.

A preliminary estimate provided by McElhanney Consulting Services places the project total at around $5.85 million. This includes roadwork and upgrades to existing sewer and water infrastructure. The cost of replacing streetlights and landscaping has also been included in the estimate. All of this could be covered under under the gas tax grant.

The Fourth Street and Townley Street intersection is identified in the Master Transportation Plan as requiring improvements to traffic flow. The report notes concern over an increase in collision due to the current intersection unusual traffic control figuration.

“The intersection is seeing increased traffic as the number of visitors to Revelstoke grows. The intersection is also on a main truck route and during highway closures sees increased traffic as vehicles are rerouted from the Trans-Canada using the eastern access,” Mike Thomas, Director of Engineering stated in a report to council.

The deadline to apply for the grant is June 17. If the application is successful work could begin during the 2018 construction season.

The City of Revelstoke has already completed one roundabout on Victoria Road near the Nomad restaurant. The roundabout has been met with some controversy, particularly when estimated costs for the project doubled.
