Revelstoke Snowmobile Club banquet honours past presidents at 50th banquet

The Revelstoke Community Centre was filled with a rich history of local snowmobiling club on Friday, March 23.

The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club honoured its past leadership at their 50th anniversary banquet held at the community centre on Mar. 23. In attendance were many who have led the club since its inception 50 years ago.

The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club got its start 50 years ago when a meeting was held in the Elks Hall on Sept. 23, 1968. Ron LaRoy, who served as president in ’92-’93, found the club’s old minutes and has been busy finding historical gems from Revelstoke’s 50 years of snowmobile history. For example, back in 1968 an annual membership was $5 and a family membership was $7.50.

The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club held its first official meeting on Sept. 26, 1968 at the home of its first president, Terry Fleming.

“You start reading through the minutes and you start remembering what happened because you were there,” said LaRoy. Indeed the evening was filled with memories as 15 of the 20 past presidents walked on stage to be recognized for their contributions to the RSC, including Fleming.

Fleming said during a short speech that some of his best memories are of building the first clubhouse.

“I’m very proud of what the club has done over the years,” he said.

The RSC is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend with a number of events including the banquet held on Friday night at the Revelstoke Community Centre.

“There’s more history in this room than I could ever tell you,” said current president Daniel Kellie.
