Revelstoke RCMP warn of phone tax scam

If you get a call from Revenue Canada threatening to send RCMP over to throw you in jail for unpaid taxes, it’s a scam. Hang up the phone.

Revelstoke RCMP are warning of a persistent phone scam in Revelstoke. They are getting frequent complaints from mostly elderly residents who are getting called from scammers claiming to be from Revenue Canada. The scammers tell the residents they owe tax money to Revenue Canada, and if they don’t pay the RCMP are going to come arrest them.

“These phone calls have been occurring for several months and are not legitimate calls from Revenue Canada,” said Staff-Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky of the Revelstoke RCMP. “The RCMP will not be arresting you even if you currently owe tax money.”

Police are getting two to three complaints per day in Revelstoke.

Grabinsky said RCMP have had little success in identifying the scammers, who are believed to be calling from foreign countries.

Police advise residents to hang up if they receive a call like this.
