Revelstoke Mountaineer Reads: That small town, small world feeling

I have been at Castle Joe for a year now and I’ve noticed that there are certain books that fly out the door so fast I barely get to see their titles. One of these books is called Stories from the Vinyl Cafe by CBC radio show Stuart Mclean. Stuart Mclean is a Canadian author who has won awards such as the Stephen Leacock award for humour and the Canadian Authors Association award for non-fiction.

I have spent my life reading horror, fantasy and sci-fi so I hadn’t delved in to this book. For awhile I kept noticing it on bookshelves throughout the town and also at friends’ houses. The copies that came in to the store didn’t stick around for long so that indicated to me that I should give it a shot.

Stuart has written a fantastic pick-me-up book that revolves around the standalone chapters about a group of people and their funny, quirky and heartwarming interactions. Withe stories named The Pig, The Jock Strap, Polaroids and Driving Lessons, just to name a few, who could resist, really?

I didn’t resist and I am glad. People from town, people that were traveling through and friends that noticed I was reading this have stopped to have conversations about the likable characters such as Dave and Morley or Stuart’s background in CBC. It’s even lead in to discussions about other books and authors which will most certainly be the inspiration for my next entry.

So to wrap things up, I am closing with my recommendations for everyone to read this book. Even if you don’t like it, it’ll be guaranteed to spice up your social life!
