Big Bear Hug, by Nicholas Oldland
By Vanessa Smith
Summer is upon us and there’s no better place to be than the great outdoors … especially when you live in beautiful Revelstoke. Of course you want to be safe and attentive to your surroundings, being sure to take care of all the flora and fauna at your every turn.
Big Bear Hug is a marvelous children’s book about caring for everyone and everything with just a simple HUG! If only it were that easy in this political hot bed of challenges we read about day after day.
Nicholas Oldland is a graduate from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick where he earned a degree in fine arts. He has enjoyed success as a commercial artist and filmmaker before committing to his role as creative director for Hatley, a popular apparel company he runs with his brothers.
He always wanted to write a book and after one sleepless night he blindly scratched out the story for a Big Bear Hug … looking it over in the morning he realized it was “something” and spent the next few weeks sketching frantically until it was done.
The Big Bear Hug hosts a charming cast of characters each meeting bear along his travels. Bear is so filled with love and happiness that whenever he comes across another living thing he gives it a hug. He spends his day wandering the forests greeting new acquaintances with a great Big Bear Hug — until he crosses paths of an axe wielding human. He suddenly loses his desire for affection.
This charming tale, of the power of a hug, is the first in the series of contemporary fables Nicholas Oldland has written. Be sure to read all five classic stories which explore the personalities of Bear’s friends.
