Revelstoke COVID new cases drop to three, bucking regional trend

Revelstoke drops to three new cases in weekly reporting period. Update on ‘invalid’ vaccination re-do, new vaccination numbers for Revelstoke clinics.

The number of new COVID-19 diagnoses in the Revelstoke Local Health Area has dropped to three new cases.

The number is a big drop from two weeks ago, when new weekly cases peaked at 33. There have been 72 new COVID-19 cases diagnosed in August in the Revelstoke LHA.

Unlike in other provinces, B.C. health authorities do not provide the number of active cases per local health area.

High regional infection rates

There are significant case numbers in many health areas neighbouring Revelstoke. Golden, Salmon Arm, Enderby, Kamloops and the Central Okanagan, for example, all have daily case rates above 20 per 100,000 population.

Some new vaccinations continue in Revelstoke

It's challenging to provide a detailed picture of vaccination progress in Revelstoke because, unlike other provinces, B.C. health authorities do not provide much detail at the local health level. For example, Interior Health has declined requests for a spreadsheet of first and second doses for Revelstoke.

This makes it challenging to assess the impact of provincial vaccination policy changes here, for example.

On Aug. 20, 64 people received a first dose, while 110 received a second one at a Revelstoke clinic.

On Aug. 27, 60 people received a first dose, while 189 received a second. There was another clinic held on Aug. 28, when eight people received a first dose and 85 a second.

Currently, Revelstoke is listed at 88% for first doses for people aged 12+, and 77% for second doses.

'Invalid' vaccine re-do situation unclear

Revelstokemountaineer.com followed up with Interior Health about the 516 invalid doses in Revelstoke that were announced on Aug. 24. We asked if everyone who had received an invalid dose had been notified, the status of re-doing those vaccines, and also questions that would help ease some peoples' concerns they received an invalid dose by ruling them out. Interior Health did not provide a response by deadline, but indicated it was still working on the questions.

The total number of doses administered since the announcement seems to indicate that the majority have not been redone.

Interior Health COVID-19 protocols clarification

There has been some confusion in Revelstoke about the Interior Health-wide restrictions that were announced on Aug. 20. Revelstokemountaineer.com asked Interior Health for clarification of the rules, including differences between Central Okanagan and the rest of Interior Health. We also asked for a response on the justifications for the decision. Interior Health did not respond by deadline but a communication staff member said they were working on it.
