Video Revelstoke Arts Council celebrates multicultural performances with World Series

Get ready to experience a journey of cultural delights as the Revelstoke Arts Council’s World Series  continues with two amazing performances. The multicultural event kicked off with the sounds and dances of Zimbabwe when Black Umolosi performed on March 24. The two remaining shows highlight the beauty of Spanish Flamenco Dancing and the thumping sounds of the Japanese taiko drums.

Flamenca Rosario La Monarca

When: Saturday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Rosario Ancer is more interested in the continuing growth of the flamenco art from than in simply reiterating its past. As an interpreter of flamenco, Ancer explores new possibilities by crossing boundaries of history and culture. Ancer describes La Monarca: The Monarch and the Butterfly Effect as a very personal work, one that is emotional and resonant with the meaning of her own life.

“The monarch’s cycle of life and constant migration gave me a understanding of this unique and magnificent creature and provided me with an insight into my own motivations and driving force,” Ancer writes on La Flamenca’s website. “Being a migrant between three home reminded of the recurrent autumn pilgrimage of the monarch butterflies between Canada and Mexico. “How do they do it?” It is not difficult to guess; it is connected to survival.”

La Monarca reflects on Ancer’s own journey, travelling between her birthplace in Mexico, Spain, and Canada. Ancer moved to Vancouver with her husband, guitarist Victor Kolstee, in 1989 where the two co-founded their school Centro Flamenco. Ancer’s risk taking artistic spirit and dedication to flamenco dance innovation outside flamenco’s traditional scenography, opens up a new dimension of flamenco storytelling that demonstrates the tremendous potential of contemporary flamenco dance.

Uzume Taiko

When: Saturday, April 21 at 3 p.m.

Where: Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre

Known around the world for their bold music, humour, and theatrical stage presence, Uzume Taiko have hand crafted a unique brand of West-Coast Canadian Taiko drumming that offers a unique experience to their audience. Uzume Taiko use a diverse collection of percussive and melodic instruments as well as taiko drums to create a fusion between old and new styles of drumming. The group combines choreographed martial arts along with the heart-stopping pulse of the O-Daiko drum and the rhythm of a jazz ensemble to create an unforgettable experience.
