Photo: Soup’s up for Welcome Week

The new Soupalicious event at the Revelstoke Community Centre on Nov. 19, which was held as part of Welcome Week 2016, saw chefs and cooks from restaurants across town show of their best soups for the over 200 people who attended the event. For $10, visitors could try all the soups.

The Community Connections Revelstoke Society event highlighted food security issues in the community. Community Food & Outreach Coordinator Jenna Fraser created a soup based on foods donated to the Food Recovery Program, a growing program that sees restaurants, food stores and other businesses donate food that is not fit for sale bay producers, processors and retailers.

In the first six months of the program, over 35,000 pounds of food has been saved from waste, at an estimated value of $87,500. It’s estimated that $31 billion worth of food is wasted in Canada each year, which is about 40% of food produced yearly in Canada.
