Photo gallery: Trash inspired fashion in Revelstoke

Revelstoke’s first Trashion show was a big success with a full house at the Rockford on Sunday, April 24.

Models showed off 14 designs made from a variety of trash such as magazines, foil and plastic bags.

Birch & Lace Hair Company held the event and money raised will go towards the North Columbia Environmental Society (NCES) and WaterAid.

Birch & Lace owner Sara Sansom explained that her business was founded, and focuses, on reducing waste.

“I thought this was a really cool way to combine the fashion industry with waste diversion and I thought it would be a cool way to involve the community,” she said.

“I think it’s been a huge success, I’m really stoked, and I’ll definitely do it again.”

NCES coordinator Kate Borucz said Sansom had approached the group with her idea and the fun event was a great way to get the community thinking about the environment.

“I think it’s such a great, positive way for the community to get involved and it shines a light on something that does have a negative impact on the environment, but people can have fun with it,” she said.

Once the models strutted the catwalk, judges assessed them on their wow factor, the personality models had on the runway, overall creativity and use of trash.

“I thought it was a really cool effort, there was some really good use of trash and the creativity was impressive,” judge and 1st Impressions hairdresser Britt Cochrane said.

After some discussion the results were in. Best Accessory went to Arleigh Garratt for her necklace made out of coffee pods and electrical wires. Most Electrifying went to Rob and Linda Silano for their outfit made out of electrical cords and plugs. The Oscar went to Danielle Ambs for her intricate dress made from VHS tape and first place went to Sarah Spurr for her glittering mermaid dress, made from a wide variety of trash.

Local businesses contributed products for the prizes, the auction and the raffle.
