A second farmers’ market is in the works for Revelstoke.
The Revelstoke Local Food Initiative recently met to discuss creating a second market they say will be a “vibrant, inclusive market for our community.”
The discussion came in the wake of the Revelstoke Farm and Craft Market board’s decision to not include long-time vendor Wild Flight Farm at this summer’s market. That decision was upheld during a vote at the Revelstoke Farm and Craft Market’s annual general meeting held this past Saturday.
Approximately 70 community members stood outside of Saturday’s AGM to show support for Wild Flight and to highlight what many say are deep rooted issues with the governance of the Revelstoke Farm and Craft Market board.
“This market sprung from the need in the community and after the drama of the past couple of weeks,” said Sarah Harper president of the LFI. “It’s become apparent there’s a need for this market.”
Harper said that while there are plans in the works for a second market, it’s too soon to be able to confirm details such as where the market will be held, or what days it would be held on.
Currently the focus is on creating a collaborative steering committee to oversee development of the second market. The committee will consist of:
- 2 LFI Members
- 2 Community Representatives
- 2 Business Representatives
- 2 Vendor Representatives
- 1 Food Security Coordinator
“The big piece is that it will be an inclusive process,” said Harper.
The LFI plans to send out a community survey to gather more information about the market.
“It’s a super tight time-line,” said Harper.
The Revelstoke Farm and Craft Market board said they are supportive of a second market being created. Plans to create a second market had been in the works former director Dan Meakes said in a previous story with the Mountaineer.
There appears to be growing community support for a second market in Revelstoke. Social media posts have appeared from community members asking how they can become involved in creating the second market.
The LFI has also posted a survey online asking residents about what they’d like to see at the market.
