National Indigenous Peoples Day: Elaine Auger hosting two beading workshops
The traditional Indigenous art dates back thousands of years and has recently gained popularity internationally.
If you’ve ever been curious about traditional Indigenous beaded jewelry, now is your chance to learn from a professional.
Alongside the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre, Elaine Auger is hosting two workshops this month as part of National Indigenous Peoples Day. Each workshop will span two days. The adult workshop will take place on June 17 and 18, and the children’s workshop is on June 19 and 20.
Originally from the Northwest Territories, Auger is a Dene artist currently living in Revelstoke. Using beads, cord, thread, and scavenged materials, she creates both modern and traditional jewelry. Her work, Sweet Beads Jewelry, can be found in the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre gift shop and in their winter holiday gallery.
Beading has been a part of Indigenous culture for thousands of years. Before using the beads we recognize now, Indigenous people used scavenged material including stones, shells and bones.
