Mt. Begbie Brewing’s new brewery gets development permit

Revelstoke’s Mt. Begbie Brewing Co. is staying in Revelstoke and expanding into a bigger facility.

Mt. Begbie Brewery Company will be issued a development permit for its new brewery at 2155 Oak Drive, Johnson Heights, once it completes some final requirements.

It’s the latest step after going through the process of rezoning the chosen site to allow a microbrewery on a property near the entrance to the Coast Hillcrest Hotel in Revelstoke.

Once the company moves from its downtown location, its capacity will increase to up to 15,000 hectolitres a year (a maximum of 3,170,250 US pints).

Owners Tracy and Bart Larson have planned to start construction on the new facility in the fall of this year. Once completed it will be able to offer brewery tours and more attractive options for tourists.

Councillor Scott Duke, at city council’s April 14 meeting, was in favour of the expansion.

“It’s exciting to see it move forward, to see the brewery have more capacity,” he said.

“Brewery capacity is a good thing,” Mayor Mark McKee agreed.

The organization needs to provides a landscape estimate and security in the amount of 125% of the estimated value, a standard development detail.

Council approved the development permit application unanimously.
