Movies in the Mountains: Relatos Salvajes pushes characters to their limits

Passion and fury and a high dose of revenge are a common theme for the hilarious and extraordinary Argentinian and Spanish film Wild Tales – Relatos Salvajes.

Catch this next instalment of the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre’s Movies in the Mountains series on Wednesday October 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Director Damián Szifrón has created a wonderfully entertaining revenge film comprised of six vignettes that are nothing short of what the title suggests — wild.

Each short film explores the reactions of various people who, in circumstances that turn extraordinary, are pushed to their limits.

As the film’s synopsis elaborates, “A deadly case of road rage, a wedding gone wrong, accidental manslaughter … everyday situations in which the darkest side of good people shines through and proves there is an animal in all of us.”

Some of the tales will make you squirm while others will make you vengeful, but each is captivating in its own right.

The first begins like a chance romantic encounter during a run-of-the-mill flight, but soon nosedives, literally, into something more incredible and darkly humorous.

Another will have you cheering on a responsible family man is slowly driven mad by the chains of society when his car is towed and makes him late for his daughters birthday party. The knock-on effect to his life and his outrage at paying extortionate fines without any recourse for innocence is not going to end well. But they took on the wrong person when they took on this demolition expert.

Wild Tales won best foreign film in the Spanish language at the 2015 Goyas and was nominated for best foreign-language film at the recent Academy Awards.
