Missing skier located deceased on Revelstoke Mountain Resort in out of bounds area

Late in the afternoon of Feb. 17, Revelstoke Search and Rescue located a skier reported missing late in the day Feb. 16 in Revelstoke.

Michael Foster, 24, of Airdrie, Alberta was located deceased in the Greeley drainage area northeast of the ski resort at around 4:45 p.m.

A statement by Revelstoke RCMP didn’t note the cause of death, but said that Revelstoke SAR located the missing man, whose last known whereabouts was Feb. 13 in Revelstoke. The BC Coroners Service is now investigating the incident with assistance from the Revelstoke RCMP.

The Greeley Creek area, like many backcountry areas, has many hazards, including avalanches, steep cliffs and tree wells.

In a statement, Revelstoke RCMP said they wished to thank the Revelstoke Mountain Resort Ski Patrol and the Revelstoke Search and Rescue team for their continued dedication in locating missing persons.

“The RCMP remind those using the back country to be prepared, and always carry extra food, water and a communication device. It is advisable to travel with others and to always notify a responsible person as to your expected time of return,” said Revelstoke RCMP Staff-Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky in a statement.

Foster’s last known whereabouts was at a Revelstoke backpacker’s hostel on Feb. 13. He was reported missing late in the day on Feb. 16 after he didn’t show up at work in Alberta. He had purchased a three-day ski pass on Feb. 13. His truck was located in the RMR parking lot covered in several days’ worth of snow.
