Mayor seeks meeting with transportation minister
The first council regular meeting of 2015 on Jan. 13 was brisk with official business lasting just 40 minutes.
Mayor Mark McKee acknowledged a letter from resident Nick Thomas (read more here Resident calls for action on highway carnage | Revelstoke Mountaineer) regarding the state of the Trans-Canada Highway and recent fatal incidents.
“I am working on getting a meeting with the Minister of Transportation, Todd Stone,” he said.
“I think there are some operational changes that could be made to look after the travelling public a little better. I think it is big issue for the community.”
Mayor McKee also made a point of commending the Revelstoke community for their quick action in helping stranded travellers plus recognized the effort of snow removalists who worked around the clock during the latest snowstorms.
“It shows the type of community that we are and one I’m proud to be the mayor of,” he said.
Golf club financial implications studied
Council received a finance department report about the financial implications of relief requests from the Revelstoke Golf Club.
The city may lose over $43,000 should it decide to waive the Revelstoke Golf Club’s fees from the past two years.
The club has been struggling for some time and late last year requested a write-off of its outstanding debt with the city.
The council finance committee crunched the numbers has submitted the impact report to council.
The report shows that writing off $35,858 (excluding taxes) is equivalent to a property tax increase of about 0.4%.
The historic club also requested a redo of its lease agreement with more sympathetic terms, plus consideration of financial assistance in the city’s future budgets. Its current five-year lease began in November 2012.

All other council business proceeded briskly. The next council meeting will be on Tuesday, January 27.
