May 10 live: Winnipeg indie rockers Yes We Mystic promise to bring it

Winnipeg indie rockers Yes We Mystic play The Last Drop Pub this Sunday, May 10, as part of a western Canada tour of their new 7-inch Vestige. On the art side of the indie spectrum, Yes We Mystic produces diverse sounds from their guitar/cello/mandolin/violin/keyboard/drums setup. Singer Adam Fuhr rides high on the vocal spectrum, digging deep for emotionally-driven performances. We caught up with Yes We Mystic for a Q&A:

Revelstoke Mountaineer: Tell us about yourself and your music.

Yes We Mystic: We’re a close-knit group of people who pride ourselves on embracing the unfamiliar and even the strange. We grab ideas from anywhere we can to create music that is aggressively original and yet accessible and fun to the people around us.

RM: Your new 7-inch Vestige (released May 5) features your songs Wood Wheel and The Contest of Strength remixed several times by various artists, including Kelowna’s Andrew Judah. Why did you choose to do the originals/remix format, and the artists you worked with?

YWM: The 7-inch, Vestige, is made up of two songs that we’ve been mulling on for a while and fit together in an odd way. The remixes came second, when we asked a bunch of our friends from across the country to make something new with our songs. It’s a really neat thing to hear your music made new again. Each remix is so unique, so the entire release turned out really special. Mark Mills was the first to suggest doing a remix and that kind of got it started. Mark is an amazing human being and we loved that he offered to do so because it’s something we probably wouldn’t have considered but loved the result of.

RM: After the tour, you’re set to work with Jace Lasek on a full-length in June. What direction are you heading with the album?

YWM: We’re going all-out. Spending a month in a studio is something we’ve never done before and we are so incredibly excited to perfect these songs we’ve working on for so long. In a lot of ways, this is a beginning. To us, it feels like we’ve been doing this forever but we’re really so young in the grand scheme of things. It’s really invigorating to finally be getting our newer, more adventurous songs out there.

RM: In your live shows, you rely on emotionally-connected vocal performances. Can you bring it for a Sunday night show in a B.C. resource town?

YWM: Definitely.
