A 62-year-old man died Saturday night in Malakwa after a train struck a car stranded on a CP Rail crossing.

The collision happened just before 10 p.m. on Mar. 21 at the Malakwa Road and Summerfeld-Husted Road crossing, Sicamous RCMP said in a media release. Police originally responded to a call of a vehicle stuck on the tracks.

In a statement, Cst. Patrick Pyper of the Sicamous RCMP detachment said the three adult occupants had exited the Chrysler sedan before it was struck by a passing train, which could not stop in time.

However, when the westbound train struck the vehicle, a 62-year-old man who had been a passenger in the vehicle was struck and killed.

The two female occupants of the vehicle were treated in hospital and later released.

Sicamous RCMP, CP Police and the BC Coroners Service are investigating. Sicamous RCMP said more information would be released in the coming days.
