Hockey Day in Revelstoke honours NHLer Aaron Volpatti

It was a full day of hockey action at the Revelstoke Forum for Hockey Day 2018.

The star of the 2018 show was former NHL player and Revelstoke native Aaron Volpatti, who was honoured with a jersey retirement ceremony during the day. Volpatti played for the Vancouver Canucks and the Washington Capitals.

Revelstoke native and former NHL player Aaron Volpatti was honoured with a jersey retirement ceremony at the Revelstoke Forum on Hockey Day, Saturday, Feb. 17. Volpatti started his hockey career in hometown Revelstoke before moving on the Vernon Vipers, then to the Brown University college program. He played two seasons with the Manitoba Moose before cracking the Vancouver Canucks roster in 2010. He then moved to the Washington Capitals before retiring in 2015 after an injury. Aaron Volpatti is a household name in Revelstoke. Here, Volpatti drops the ceremonial puck at the Revelstoke Grizzlies vs. Summerland Steam game. Revelstoke Grizzlies captain Tommy Bodtker (89) and Steam captain Sam Jones (4) face off. The day’s hockey included midget, firefighters vs police, kids and public games. The Steam fogged the evening with a 6-2 victory over the Grizzlies in their final regular season game. The favoured Okanagan/Shuswap Conference 2017/18 regular season points champs Revelstoke Grizzlies (73 regular season points) face the Kamloops Storm (41 regular season points) next weekend on Friday and Saturday night at the Revelstoke Forum in the first round of the playoffs. It’s playoff hockey time in Revelstoke, and the conference champion Revelstoke Grizzlies Junior B team are the favourites. If you’re looking for Canadian hockey, be at the Revelstoke Forum this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24 at 7 p.m.

That evening, the Revelstoke Grizzlies faced the Summerland Steam in the final game of the KIJHL regular season. Next Friday, Feb. 23, they face the Kamloops Storm in the first round of the KIJHL playoffs.

The Grizzlies end the season with 73 points to the Storm’s 41.

This week, the Grizzlies handed out player honours at their annual banquet.

The Revelstoke Forum is sure to be rocking next weekend, when the Grizzlies take on the Storm on Friday and Saturday night, with both games starting at 7 p.m.
