Fatal MVI on Trans-Canada west of Revelstoke closes highway Thursday afternoon

A serious head-on collision involving three vehicles on the Trans-Canada Highway 40 kilometres west of Revelstoke Thursday afternoon has left one person dead, two with critical injuries, others injured and has closed the route Thursday afternoon.

Revelstoke RCMP Staff-Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky said emergency services were notified at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21. The incident happened near the Craigellachie rest stop.

The deceased person was a woman who was entrapped in her vehicle. Two males were in critical condition and were transported to hospital. Other people in another vehicle escaped with either no injuries or minor injuries. A dog was also killed in the crash.

The injured have been brought to Queen Victoria Hospital, or hospitals in Salmon Arm and Kamloops.

A full compliment of emergency services organizations responded to the scene. The BC Coroners Service is on site, and the incident will be investigated by the Trans-Canada East Traffic Service as well as the Southeast District Traffic Analyst.

The highway closure is expected to last for several hours, with possible re-opening by 7 p.m. Thursday. “Delay is due to address well-being of patients, clearing up road conditions, police examination of the scene, final clean up and then a safe and measured re-opening. There are no detours available,” said Staff-Sgt. Grabinsky in a statement.
