Exhibition opening: Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre celebrates multi media artists
Sewing, quilts, and brushwork – both big and small – will fill the walls of the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre this month. Be sure to check out the latest exhibitions from May 3–24.
This Friday, May 3, marks the opening night of four new exhibitions at the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre. Visitors can expect to see work from Lesley Mayfield, Gabrielle Clarke, The Fierce Art Project, and the Golden Girls.
The event will run 5-9 p.m. and admission is by donation. Snacks and refreshments will also be available for purchase.
Lesley Mayfield will be taking centre stage with her newest collection entitled, ‘Beings and Energy.’ The works are all textile, typically quilts — as they have three layers stitched through. Mayfield’s method can often involve dyeing and painting fabrics, but more often she uses piecing and applique to build complex layers.

Another gallery will showcase the work of Golden-based artist and art-therapist Gabrielle Clarke. Her collection, ‘The Soft, the Small and the Sensitive,’ reflects her passion for multi-media experimentation. You can expect to see pieces that incorporate sewing machine, big brushes, Japanese paper, and fluid and high flow acrylic paints.
Next up is an exhibition named ‘My Creative Space,’ by the Fierce Art Project. The project is run by art instructor Jo C. Willems and wishes to celebrate diversity through creative expression.
The group is comprised of artists from different backgrounds and with varying skill sets. Willems describes the group as being held together by “a bond based on a deep respect for, and interest in, the uniqueness of each other’s artistic voice.”
Finally, we can also expect to see work from the visual art centre’s welcomed regulars, the Golden Girls. Expect to see some unique and intricate watercolor paintings in their newest collection entitled ‘Current Works.’
The galleries will be open 12-4 p.m. until May 24, so there’s plenty of time to check out these new exhibits!
