Video Dynamic contemporary dance company with workshop opportunities coming to Revelstoke
Glory by Shay Kuebler Radical Dance System is here. A powerful display of dance offers a social commentary of our violence-drenched culture while exploring the complexities of its glorification. Glory will be wowing audiences at the Performing Arts Centre on March 30.

Glory is a dance of purpose. Choreographer Shay Kuebler created it that way. It is meant to grab an audience and hold them captive as it presents its story. In Glory, that story consists is a series of vignettes that explore the glorification of violence in the world we inhabit.
While being interviewed by the Georgia Straight, Kuebler explained his love of martial arts and video games. He grew up watching martial arts movies, learning martial arts himself, and playing Nintendo. It was obvious to him the difference in early Mario games and today’s video games. “With Nintendo,” he told the reporter at the Straight. “You jumped on an enemy and it blinked. Now kids are playing war games and throwing grenades.” He believes martial artists are not violent themselves, being humbled by the training and the quiet confidence they gain. Kuebler told the Vernon Morning Star that the Van Damme and Chuck Norris action films he grew up with displayed a kind of controlled violence that was often defensive in nature. “There’s a sanctity in the violence I grew up with. I learned that it shouldn’t be played with,” he told the Morning Star.
It’s the shift towards the casual use of violence in today’s media and entertainment that inspired Kuebler to create Glory. The dance first premiered in 2015 at Vancouver’s Chutzpah Festival. The performance includes six dancers who incorporate martial arts, hip hop, contemporary dance and theatrical elements into a dynamic show. Glory is known to make an audience flinch in their seats. The dancers throw themselves, and each other, around the stage as they explore the glorification, normalization, and shock of the hyper violent entertainment to which we are exposed.
The performance is a true multimedia affair. With several video and projection elements and a soundtrack that ranges from classical to metal, Glory is appealing for all those who love dance.
Offering an exciting opportunity, a dance residency will be offered prior to the show’s performance. On Tuesday, March 28, from 7:30–8:30 p.m. there will be a youth workshop. It is suitable for ages 13+. There will be open rehearsals suitable for any age on Thursday, March 28 and Thursday March 29, from 5–6 p.m.
