Councillors receive committee assignments at inaugural Revelstoke council meeting

Revelstoke’s newly elected city council met for the first time this afternoon. At the inaugural council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 6, lawyer Chris Johnston administered the oaths of office for mayor-elect Gary Sulz and councillors-elect Michael Brooks-Hill, Nicole Cherlet, Steven Cross, Rob Elliot, Jackie Rhind and Cody Younker.

Johston, a former Revelstoke city councillor, spoke about the commitment it takes to sit on city council saying it takes a considerable amount of sacrifice of personal time and personal life.

“I thank the outgoing council for their service to the community the past four years and welcome the new council,” said Johnston.

Newly elected mayor Gary Sulz thanked the new council for standing up for the community, but also gave praise to previous councils, and recognizing the work of city staff in aiding council to do its work.

“We are not here today because of one particular group we are here today for every group,” said Sulz.

Tuesday’s meeting included the selection of councillors to various select committees and commissions. Here’s a break-down of committees and commissions Revelstoke city councillors will sit on:

Committees

The City of Revelstoke does not have any standing committees and instead uses the committee of the whole, which is comprised of all of council, and involves a less formal process than regular council meetings. Select committees are appointed by council with a minimum of one member of council as a member of the committee dealing with a specific issue or task.
