Construction on the Victoria/Mutas Road re-desgin begins this Monday, March 27. Speers Construction will begin work on the second phase of the $1.87 million Trans-Canada Intersection fix.
Traffic will no longer be able to turn left onto Victoria Road from Mutas Road or from Victoria Road onto Bend Road. Instead, traffic will need to use the roundabout and make a right hand turn. The sidewalk under the CP overpass will be closed during construction. Bend Road is also closed. City staff will provide weekly updates.
The first part of the Trans Canada Intersection fix was the Wright Street roundabout, which was completed this past fall. Engineers from McEhlhanny Consulting worked with the city’s engineering and planning department to provide the best option for the re-design.
Here is how the intersection will work:
- Outbound traffic (heading towards the highway from downtown) can access Tim Hortons/Shell on the right via a new slip lane, and McDonald’s/A&W on the left with a left turn lane, without needing to cross the Trans-Canada.
- Inbound traffic (from highway) can turn right into McDonald’s/A&W, but will no longer be able to turn left into Tim Hortons/Shell — traffic will instead have to proceed ahead to the Wright Street roundabout to turn around.
- Woodenhead Loop (the road that carries traffic to McDonald’s/A&W) will continue to be one-way but has a separate entry and exit point.
- Frontage Road will stay open. Restricted to one-way at one point but otherwise full movement.
- Bear statues and lamps will stay put where they are.
