Closed door review proposed following Revelstoke Crossing controversy

Revelstoke’s Economic Development Commission fears the community is divided following the aborted Revelstoke Crossing proposal and has asked city council to consider holding a debrief session about it behind closed doors.

The Revelstoke Economic Development Commission (EDC) members have expressed concern in recent meetings that the Revelstoke Crossing shopping centre proposal and development process has divided the community.

The commission has recommended city council arrange a debrief session on the process, which began in July and finished with a split council vote in November. They also suggest using someone external from city staff to oversee the meeting and that the discussion be in camera — closed to the public and media.

“Members of the Commission agreed that the intent of the debrief session is to review and improve communication with respect to development processes, and to help the community work together to identify challenges, discuss solutions and focus on moving forward proactively with future development applications,” commission director Alan Mason wrote in a report to council.

“The members of the EDC thought that this session would be a good first step in trying to bring the community ‘back together’.”

City councillors will consider the recommendation at the Jan. 12 meeting.
