City to explore other uses for Century Vallen building

It will be costly to upgrade the use of the Century Vallen building on Fourth street, but at their Mar. 24 meeting, councillors directed city staff to look into future possible uses for the building.

Currently the building is being used as a storage facility for various city departments, but Community Connections Revelstoke Society has expressed an interest in placing their food bank and a potential community food hub there.

Councillor Aaron Orlando pushed for more investigation into the city’s options after a staff report recommended keeping using the space as storage for city departments. He said the current use as a storage facility in a downtown retail location is not the best use of such a prominent building.

“It looks like an empty storefront for visitors and residents,” he said.

Councillor Gary Sulz echoed Coun. Orlando’s thoughts.

“I would like to see it go back to staff for advice on other uses for this facility and to investigate why the facility was purchased in the first place,” Sulz said.

Council unanimously passed a motion to instruct city staff to explore various options to maximize the building’s potential, and to hold talks with Community Connections Revelstoke Society about their ideas for the building.
