Brief: Revelstoke-area highways contractor hosts winter maintenance survey

Emcon Services, the contractor responsible for highway maintenance, paving, and bridge construction in the Revelstoke area, has launched a public online survey that seeks feedback on winter highway maintenance.

The company’s 2021/2022 Highway Winter Maintenance Survey is collecting public input on winter highway maintenance topics, such as snowplowing.

The survey is mainly made up of questions about whether snow clearing services are adequate. Survey participants can remain anonymous or enter their contact details.

Emcon Services maintains Service Area 12, which includes the main highways and roads surrounding Revelstoke and Golden, up to Mica Creek, down to Shelter Bay, over to Kicking Horse Canyon and north of Radium Hot Springs (excluding the National Parks).

In B.C., the provincial government contracts highways maintenance service out to private contractors, such as Emcon Services.

In January, truckers rallied in the Lower Mainland to protest winter maintenance conditions in all of the Interior of B.C., expressing concerns about about black ice, potholes, and uncleared snow.

“We have never seen B.C.’s highways as bad as they were this winter,” said Vijaydeep Sahas, president of the West Coast Trucking Association (WCTA), in an interview with driving.ca.

The WTCA demanded that the B.C. Ministry of Transportation resolve issues with winter highways maintenance in the Interior.
