Brief: Last minute race for Revelstoke mayor

Gary Sulz sat uncontested as Revelstoke’s newest mayor for most of the two-week nomination period in the upcoming civic election. Sulz, who is currently a city councillor, was among one of the first candidates to file nomination papers for the upcoming election—this time for the mayor’s seat.

As the nomination deadline loomed, no other candidates had stepped forward and it was looking as though Sulz would take the mayor’s seat by acclamation. However, just at the close of nomination period at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept 14. Darcy Wyonzek ‘s name was added to the list of mayoral candidates.

Fresh faces step forward for a spot on council.

A number of Revelstoke residents have stepped forward to announce they’ll be seeking one of the six city council spots. Many of the candidates have stepped forward to seek a seat on council for the first time. Of the 12 candidates only two, Gary Starling and Aaron Orlando, have previous council experience. Along with Sulz, Orlando is the only other candidate from the current city council to put his name forward in the upcoming Oct. 20 election.
