Brief: Bike parklet pilot program getting underway in Revelstoke

Pilot program will also help keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians, help reduce illegal parking.

The city of Revelstoke says it is doing its part to create a more bike friendly community, and has announced a new bike parklet for Revelstoke cyclists popped up downtown this week.

According to a July 19 city media release, the parklet is a pilot program supported by council that will also help keep the sidewalks clear for pedestrians. The parklet is located on the Royal LePage side of Mackenzie Avenue and Second Street East this week. The parklet is located in the yellow lined area of the corner and the city noted it does not take up any parking spaces.

Funds for the project came from the Resort Municipal Initiative fund, which will be used to build a trial bike parklet. The trial parklet will hold up to 16 bikes. The parklet is expected to shorten the pedestrian crossing, creating a safer, calm traffic in the area and also mitigate illegal parking.

“This is a great project and very exciting for the community”, said Darren Komonoski, operations manager. “The parklet will ensure cyclists have a place to park their bikes that will not impede pedestrians. This is just one step in making Revelstoke bike friendly for both visitors and residents of our community.”
