BC AdventureSmart is offering two-day long events in Revelstoke during Avalanche Canada’s annual Avalanche Awareness Days.
The events, which take place January 16 and 17, are aimed at increasing awareness for outdoor safety, personal preparedness and incident prevention.
A statement from BC AdventureSmart notes while the BC backcountry is beautiful, it is also remote and unpredictable at times. There has been an increase in search and rescue incidents over the past 10 months, and British Columbians are being urged to get more information prior to heading outdoors.
“Severe weather and avalanches are two of its primary hazards, so for any backcountry travel you — and everyone in your group— must be self-sufficient,” said Sandra Riches, BC AdventureSmart executive director & BC Coordinator.
Groups travelling in avalanche terrain should ensure they have proper avalanche training no matter regardless of their backcountry sport of choice.
The free-to-attend BC AdventureSmart events take place January 16 at the Boulder Mountain parking lot from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and January 17 at Revelstoke Mountain Resort from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club, Revelstoke RCMP and Revelstoke Search and Rescue will provide additional support.
