Arrow Lakes sisters Crystal and Janet Spicer honoured with Sierra Club award
Nakusp sisters Crystal Spicer and Janet Spicer were awarded the Sierra Club’s Watershed Hero Award at a ceremony in Spokane, Washington on Feb. 27.
The award is given to those who have made a significant contribution to protecting water for the common good.
The sisters come from a pioneering farming family in the Nakusp area. Their parents turned education and experience in farming into a thriving community farm that served the area, but their life work and land was devastated by the flooding of the Arrow Lakes.
Janet is a renowned organic market farmer in the Arrow Lakes area.
They were cited for their activism on issues related to the Columbia River, including the formation of the Columbia Basin Revitalization Coalition, a group whose mandate is to: “call for an improved dam management plan that will allow restoration and revitalization within the Columbia River Basin”
They were awarded jointly by the Sierra Club and the Center for Environmental Law & Policy.
