Smart and caring Revelstoke

Members of the Revelstoke Community Foundation gathered on Giving Tuesday Nov. 24 to disperse funds to contest winners who contributed written submissions about what makes Revelstoke a smart and caring community.

The contest was part of an initiative launched by Canadian Governor General David Johnston, who challenged Canada to build a ‘Smart and Caring Nation.’

It’s a national initiative of Community Foundations of Canada. The goal is to ensure that every community in Canada is effectively served by a community foundation by Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

The initiative challenged Revelstoke residents to write about what a smart and caring community meant to them. The winners received $1,000 or $500, which they could dedicate to charities of their choice.

The youth winner was Gavin Richardson, who donated $500 to the Revelstoke B.C. Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Colette Poirier won $500 and contributed it to the North Columbia Environmental Society.

Jackie Morris received $1,000 and donated it to Revelstoke Bear Aware. She wrote that a smart and caring community cares for all its residents, including the bears.
