Revelstoke RCMP investigating roundabout incident involving traffic guard

Revelstoke RCMP say they are investigating an incident involving a motorist and a traffic guard that drew lots of attention when a video of the incident was widely shared on social media.

Police say the incident happened at about 12:20 p.m. on August 13. Traffic in the area was snarled due to an MVI on the highway, and the guard had been placed at the roundabout to control traffic.

The short 28-second video (link) seems to start in the middle of an ongoing incident between the driver and the guard, with the mid-sized SUV pressed against the knees of the traffic guard, who is directing the motorist to turn right out of the intersection. The motorist appears to be attempting to proceed through the roundabout despite being directed to detour to the right. For a brief moment, the vehicle’s wheels move forward while the guard is in contact with the front end of the car.

The guard pulls out his cell phone camera and appears to record the vehicle, the driver, then after the SUV eventually turns right, its rear license plate.

The video has been shared hundreds of times on social media, with a vast majority of people calling the driver out for dangerous and selfish behaviour.

“[The incident] is currently still under investigation,” said Sgt. Chris Dodds, Acting Detachment Commander for the Revelstoke RCMP.
