Brief: Search and Rescue, RCMP search Columbia River after report of body in the water

The Big Eddy Bridge was closed for several hours Sunday evening after a 911 call was made about a possible body in the Columbia River.

Revelstoke RCMP Sgt. Chris Dodds told the Mountaineer an unconfirmed observation was made by a witness on the Big Eddy Bridge, who then called 911 at around 6:40 p.m. Sunday, July 12. Both RCMP and Revelstoke Search and Rescue deployed to search the area. The search continued until 10 p.m. when it was called off for the night due to poor visibility.

Dodds said the Revelstoke RCMP have received no reports of anyone falling into the river. The search continues today, Monday, July 13, 2020.

Update: July 13, 11:45 a.m.

As of late Monday morning Revelstoke RCMP and local search and rescue crews continue to search the Columbia River.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or knows of a loved one or friend who is overdue to return is urged to call the Revelstoke RCMP at 250-837-5255.

Update: July 14, 4:40 p.m.

In response to an email from the Mountaineer, Revelstoke RCMP Sgt. Chris Dodds said the “extensive search of the surface and shore” was suspended at approximately 4 p.m. yesterday, July 13. Dodds said nothing was located during the search and there has been no missing persons reported.

“We are still investigating but no further search is scheduled at this time. If further information comes forward to us, we will re-assess,” said Dodds.
