Revelstoke golfers win 85th Labor Day Tournament

Two local golf members took out top honours at last weekend’s historic 85^th Labor Day Golf Tournament at the Revelstoke Golf Club.

The weather held out fairly well by recent Revelstoke standards with drizzle on Saturday and Monday but golfers were treated to a mostly clear day on Sunday, emphasizing the course’s picturesque location by the river and surrounded by mountains.

Competitors came from around the province and Alberta to attend this historic event and assistant to the director of golf Taylor Pearcey described the special attraction to golf.

“I’ve played every other sport known to man, there is no other feeling to place that ball exactly where you want it to go,” he said.

“It’s a challenge definitely, it’s the most difficult sport — that I’ve played — to master. Skateboarding would be the next hardest.”

Taylor said they were pleased with this year’s attendance at the event, which was about 80, up from last year.

“We’re just happy we’re keeping ours going,” he said.

Kyle Bester, who recently relocated to Revelstoke from Canmore, Alberta was the male champion of the tournament, winning by six shots. The runner-up was Kris Robazza from the Fraser Valley.

Overall lowest gross, with no handicap, for the women’s event was Revelstoke’s Coreen Tucker and the runner-up was Mary Lukacs, from Vernon’s Spallumcheen Golf Club.

Tucker has golfed for many years and as one of the lower handicaps, was confident she had a chance to win.

“It’s wasn’t a big field but it was a competitive one, which was nice,” she said.

“Some [of the players] have come back for 25 years straight. We get together; it’s a little reunion every year. Labor Day is a really special tournament; it’s a lot of fun and there’s a lot of camaraderie. It’s just a nice weekend. It’s kind of like, for me, finishing the season off.”
