Alberta man dies after collision on Trans-Canada Highway

RCMP say alcohol may have been a factor

An Alberta man has died after his passenger truck collided with a commercial tractor trailer early Monday evening.

On Monday, January 20 at around 7:40 p.m., Revelstoke RCMP were dispatched to a fatal two-vehicle collision, involving a commercial vehicle and a passenger truck, approximately 35 kilometres east of Revelstoke on the Trans-Canada Highway.

BC Ambulance Service, Revelstoke Fire Rescue Service and the Revelstoke RCMP arrived on scene and located an eastbound commercial tractor trailer and westbound pickup truck. The driver of the passenger truck was deceased on scene. The driver of the commercial vehicle sustained serious neck and back injuries. The commercial driver was transported to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke.

The Trans-Canada East Traffic Services unit of the RCMP arrived on scene along with the RCMP Traffic Analyst. RCMP said in a statement that through the course of the investigation it was determined the passenger truck had struck another tractor trailer vehicle approximately one kilometre earlier, and then went head on into the second tractor trailer. Alcohol may have been a factor. Other vehicle drivers that happened along the collision scene attempted to offer first aid.

Revelstoke RCMP said road conditions were rated as “good winter driving” with temperatures at approximately -5 C with clear roads and excellent visibility.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed until the investigation was concluded and the vehicles could be removed from the road by a local towing company. The road was re-opened by approximately 1:30 a.m on Tuesday January 21, 2020.
