Area restriction issued for Akolkolex wildfire, Parks Canada plans prescribed burns
Akolkolex Wildfire area restriction closes part of the Akolkolex FSR until October 15; Parks Canada is planning a series of prescribed fires in Glacier and Mount Revelstoke national parks.
The BC Wildfire Service has issued an area restriction for the vicinity of the Akolkolex wildfire, prohibiting travel on the part of the forest service road (FSR). The area restriction begins at the Akolkolex FSR and Standfast Creek junction. The restriction prohibits travel on the part of the Akolkolex FSR near a wildfire in the area.

The restriction issued on August 18 will remain in effect until October 15, 2022, or until the order is rescinded.
BC Wildfire Service says the restriction reflects the need to protect the public where ongoing fire impression activities are taking place. Areas such as Echo Lake recreation site and Akolkolex Falls will remain accessible.
The fire, located approximately 24 kilometres east of Revelstoke, has grown dramatically. On the fire’s ignition date, August 12, the estimated size was 4.2 hectares and has grown to approximately 106 hectares by August 18.
Smoke lingering over Revelstoke creating a light haze can be attributed to this fire to the south and to a fire just Northeast of Sale Mountain called the LaForme Drainage wildfire. The LaForme Drainage wildfire, started on August 3 by a suspected lightning strike, is deemed out of control by BC Wildfire Service. The fire measured an estimated 54 hectares in size on August 18.

The Flat Creek prescribed fire in Glacier national park could be ignited anywhere from Aug. 18, depending on conditions. The plan is to burn about 580 hectares near to the CP Rail line and Trans-Canada Highway.
