Firefighters snuff out Greenbelt fire

A small fire broke out on the pathway next to the Illecillewaet Bridge on Wednesday, burning a downed tree and scorching grass.

A fire broke out in the Illecillewaet Greenbelt area at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26.

A cottonwood tree that had been blown over the greenbelt walkway in Sunday’s windstorm went up in flames. It spread to the nearby tall, dry grass.

Over a dozen Revelstoke firefighters responded and had the fire under control by about 1:30.

A fire department spokesperson said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
