Revelstoke Community Response Network: Winter holds many hazards for vulnerable adults
“There is something simple that everyone can do from popping in to check on an elderly neighbour, to making time for older relatives.” Says BC CRN coordinator Éliane McGoldrick.
The BC CRN wants to create awareness that winter brings special challenges for vulnerable adults and seniors. They need to be aware of these issues and take steps to protect themselves during the long winter months. Drop in temperature could increase health problems for older people and risk leaving them isolated in their own homes. It’s a good idea to call your doctor’s office to find out when they are open, get prescriptions filled in advance and not when the medication has run out. These steps may help prevent the need to go to an emergency department.
Winter-related injuries are another issue. For example, snow shoveling can lead to back injury and even heart attack. Slips and falls are another danger. Seniors should take small steps, wear sensible footwear and hold onto railings when going down steps.
Cold temperatures can be dangerous. Vulnerable adults with respiratory conditions are particularly sensitive to cold air, which can cause spasms in the lungs. They people should limit the amount of time they spend outside in the winter and limit the amount of skin exposed to the cold. Even the neck and face can lose heat and put seniors at risk for hypothermia. Some medications can also cause the body to lose heat.
Previous research shows that cold weather can increase the risk of health problems in older people, including heart attacks and strokes, respiratory problems, pneumonia and depression. Feeling isolated and lonely is also known to have an impact on physical and mental health.
