Revelstoke explores lighting up Trans-Canada Highway bridge over Columbia River

City of Revelstoke staff are exploring options to light up Revelstoke’s Trans-Canada bridge in order to help improve the city’s curb appeal to highway motorists.

A few years ago the city requested permission from the B.C. transportation ministry for a similar idea, but it was turned down. Now the city’s enhancement committee is hoping to give it another go.

“Things may have changed with [transportation ministry] personnel, maybe highways will be more supportive,” director of community economic development Alan Mason said.

The committee, which is charge of improving the appeal of Revelstoke to benefit the local economy, has also put forward a smaller concept of placing lights in the trees at the western entrance of Revelstoke.

“It would be pretty neat to have the town lit up,” Mason said. “It would stand out in people’s memories.”

The initiatives would improve Revelstoke’s appeal to motorists, but installation and ongoing maintenance will be a significant cost that city staff have yet to explore fully. First, city councillors will review these ideas at the city council meeting on Tues. Mar 22 and vote whether to explore the idea further.
