Tuesday night explosion at Bullet Basin prompts police response

At approximately 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, an explosion occurred at the Bullet Basin gun range in Revelstoke. The range is operated by the Revelstoke Rod and Gun Club.

Police arrived in response to disturbance complaints from local residents. The explosion was caused by tannerite, a type of reactive target.

Although a municipal bylaw ticket was issued, local authorities state that “the subjects were in compliance with firearm regulations and it was not their intention to cause concern or disruption in the neighborhood.”

However, those involved at Bullet Basin did acknowledge the inappropriate timing of using those materials.

According to police, there are currently no regulations in regards to the use of exploding targets at the range. Those with valid firearms licenses can use and possess tannerite in a safe manner.

Revelstoke police plan on following up with Bullet Basin management on their usage of tannerite. A representative from the Revelstoke Rod and Gun Club was not immediately available for comment.
