A motorcyclist is deceased after being struck by a stray tire that detached from a trailer pulled by an oncoming pickup truck. The Trans-Canada Highway west of Revelstoke was closed for several hours on July 3, 2022, following the deadly accident.
The BC Highway Patrol Collision Unit says a westbound F-350 pickup truck with Alberta license plates was pulling a 16-foot utility trailer when one of the tires unexpectedly detached, colliding with a motorcycle driver.
The RCMP Collision Unit says that Revelstoke RCMP and BC Highway Patrol responded to the crash at around 2:20 p.m. to a location 34 kilometres west of Revelstoke near The Enchanted Forest attraction.
The highway patrol says the tire bounced into the eastbound oncoming traffic lane and barely missed another motorcycle before striking a second Harley-Davidson motorcycle with a 55-year-old driver from Sooke and a passenger on board.
Despite efforts from a passerby physician from Germany and a nurse, RCMP highway patrol says the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The passenger on the motorcycle was injured and taken to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.
BC Highway Patrol Revelstoke says it is continuing this investigation with assistance from the BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement program and the BC Coroners’ Service.
Anyone with information regarding this fatal crash, including anyone with dashboard camera video of pre-collision driving, is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol Revelstoke at 250-814-8173.
